The AIS Business Acceleration 2023 is proud to announce the winners of this program. There are four winners from many countries and implementation areas, that is Azura Indonesia, Kee Farms, Robo Marine, and Containder. The winner will be awarded with a USD 20,000 seed-funding which will be arranged through innovation challenge modality. The winners will also get a chance to present their innovative idea in front of the head of states in the AIS Forum High Level Meeting 2023.

The AIS Business Acceleration 2023 seeks to facilitate innovators to deploy technology and innovative solutions to enhance climate adaptation and resilience across different sectors and levels in AIS’s countries. The ambition and expected outcome from this AIS Business Acceleration is to create a commercially viable business model that can be deploy and implemented in one or more AIS participating countries, with a pilot project goals that to implement innovations that are transferable, replicable, and scalable that can be sustained and contribute directly to the achievement of AIS goals.

The winners were picked by the AIS team with a panel of judges from qualifications based on some assessment criteria. From a total up to 30 start-ups with many innovative ideas proposed, selected a total of four winners.

The first winner, Azura Indonesia, is driven to provide an innovative electric propulsion system, called MantaOne, that is powered by a battery pack and can give a direct impact on cost efficiency and carbon footprint reduction. MantaOne is going to give cost efficiency to the end-user, purposely for helping low-income fishermen, by at least 50% per trip and reduce carbon footprint by at least 60%. This innovation hopes would speed up development of renewable infrastructure in parallel and boost up the blue economy within the community. The implementation area of MantaOne from Azura Indonesia will be in Fiji.

The second winner, Containder, provides a digitalization system for waste management in a region. It monitors the collection point, people complain, retribution system, and other waste management processes digitally, so it will create transparency and hope for public self-discipline with their waste management. The implementation area of Containder waste management system will be in Papua, Indonesia.

The third winner, Kee Farms, aims to engage solutions for sargassum (algae) inundations, which are a net negative to the coastal ecosystem. This programme will lead to removals in areas where coral reef communities are impacted, so will safeguarding coastal fisheries and biodiversity. Kee Farms also hopes to educate and create awareness of the impact that sargassum brings to vulnerable communities, and allow for a sustainable system that is replicable with integration of vulnerable communities. Kee Farms programs will be implemented in Jamaica and the Caribbean area.

The fourth winner, Robo Marine, created ARHEA (Advance Drifter GPS Oceanography Coverage Area) that can provide accurate and reliable data on oceanographic parameters, such as monitoring MPAs, predicting fishing grounds, assessing coral bleaching, and monitoring water quality. This instrument hope to guide decision-making processes to contribute to the preservation and protection of marine biodiversity and ecosystem. ARHEA implementation will be in Fiji.

As these start-ups are showing a dramatic growth and providing so much ideas and innovations, AIS with the business acceleration program seeing the challenges and opportunities to seek creative ideas and breakthrough solutions, that can help archipelagic and island states’ economy and businesses to be more adaptive, stronger, and resilient.

After a sideline discussion at the Ocean Conference 2017 in New York City and a follow-up Conference on the Archipelagic and Island States Forum in Jakarta in 2017, a common understanding among AIS participating countries was born. The Archipelagic and Island States Forum was then formally established through the adoption of the Manado Joint Declaration during the first Ministerial Meeting of the participating countries on 1 November 2018.

The Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum is a platform designed to include island states and archipelagic countries regardless of their region, size, and development level. A global initiative that brings together 51 archipelagic and island nations to take part in a collective forum addressing challenges of ocean resource usage for sustainable economic growth, climate change resiliency, ocean pollution, emergency management, and the enhancement of sustainable fisheries.

The Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum stands as a visionary platform, purposefully crafted to encompass the participation of 51 diverse archipelagic and island nations from across the globe. Its overarching mission is to facilitate a collective forum aimed at addressing the pressing issue of sustainable development. Within this forum, these nations come together to forge international partnerships and foster cooperation in their shared commitment to sustainable development. By uniting their efforts and expertise, the AIS Forum plays a pivotal role in harnessing the collective power of these island states to tackle the environmental, economic, and social challenges they face while striving to build a more sustainable and interconnected world.
Five years after the establishment of the AIS Forum, leaders from AIS countries have agreed to strengthen commitment for collaboration among nations. On 11th October 2023 in Bali, Indonesia, at the First High Level Meeting of the AIS Foru,, 32 AIS countries agreed to adopt the Leaders’ Declaration on the Solidarity of the Archipelagic and Island States. The adoption of this declaration marked a significant step for the AIS Forum to further elevate its position in the global scheme. The Declaration focuses on four collaborative areas, which are:
